Text Mining the College News

The digital collection of The College News, a Bryn Mawr College student publication active from 1914 to 1968, is a valuable asset for studying institutional history over a crucial period of social change. The 2021 Digital Scholarship Fellows used this resource to create a corpus, two web-based visualizations, and a tactile visualization. The team executed these projects by using computational methods to extract names, places, and terms from the College News with the goal of simplifying access to marginalized stories.

Student Highlight: Hannah Nye '22

When I first came to Bryn Mawr, I had no idea what I wanted to major in. I took Environmental Studies 101 my first semester because I had never taken a course in environmentalism before, and I fell in love with the department as I continued to take more courses. I see learning about and protecting the planet and its diverse peoples as a prerequisite to solving any of our world's major issues in a respectful and effective way.

Becoming a Blossoming Creator in Bryn Mawr's Makerspace

When I stumbled upon a Handshake listing for Bryn Mawr’s Makerspace Spring Intensive over winter break, I felt a jolt of excitement but hesitated to enroll. I’d always had lofty dreams of satisfying my creative impulses by printing vinyl stickers, risograph zines, and more, but thought learning to do so was much too design-heavy—and technologically advanced—for me to take on during a busy semester. Fortunately, I was able to push past my concerns, and am so glad I did.

Taking a Praxis Course During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Theory in (Digital) Action

After much deliberation, I decided to enroll in the course despite pandemic limitations—and I don’t regret my decision. While I was initially concerned about our ability to do relevant, purposeful work, I felt more optimistic after learning the specific details of our semester-long project. We would be consulting with LandHealth Institute to develop a stewardship organization proposal for Cobbs Creek, which links Haverford’s campus to Philadelphia.
