Long after 360s end, students’ field experiences continue to have an impact. “We went to the top of a solar radiation tower and the global change research site and had an awesome view of the Chesapeake Bay. Solar radiation is measured above the tree line, so we were super high up”, recounts Callan Napier ‘21.

Start off the week by welcoming reporter and documentary filmmaker Ximena Natera to campus tomorrow afternoon! Natera specializes in migration, human rights violations, peace processes, and collective memory at the U.S. and Mexico border. Her work has been recognized by Mexico’s National Journalism Award, the Gabriel Garcia Márquez Foundation, and Pictures of the Year Latam.

The renowned children’s book writer and illustrator David Wiesner visited campus to give his lecture, “The Art of the Picture Book”, on November 18th. Wiesner is known for his strikingly beautiful watercolor and gouache work, and is only the second person in history to win 3 Caldecott Medals. He shared valuable insights he’s gathered over the course of his successful career with the Bryn Mawr community, encouraging the audience to consider the inextricable connection between words and images.

Y.A. and children’s author Catherine Gilbert Murdock ‘88 gave a wonderful talk yesterday, sharing the ways in which she uses history to tell a compelling story.

Today, the #bordersbmc360 is visiting Songzanlin Temple in Shangri-La. We’ve been learning some of the customs associated with visiting sacred Tibetan Buddhist spaces, such as stepping into rooms with our left foot and out with our right, and walking clockwise around the grounds. We also received insight regarding how religion spreads across borders, and the similarities and differences that span Thai, Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan Buddhism. The #BordersBMC360 hit the ground running last week with some exciting educational aids. Professor Jonathan Wilson of Plants and People brought in a variety of angiosperms –– a large, diverse group of plants that have flowers and produce seeds — so students could examine, identify, and count key organs.
